This method works because it creates a humid environment without letting water touch the tobacco directly.

Start by gently breaking up the compressed block with clean fingers. Do not grind it. Push it to one side of the pouch or tin to create space. Next prep your towel. Wet the paper towel then wring it out as hard as you can. It should feel damp not dripping. If water runs when you squeeze it is too wet.

Now position the towel. Place the damp towel in the container but try not to let it touch the tobacco. In a pouch fold it and rest it against the inside wall. In a tin lay it on a piece of baking paper above the tobacco. The goal is humidity in the air not wet leaf.

Seal the pouch or tin properly. Leave it at room temperature out of direct sun. Check it after about twelve hours.

After that first check the top layer will usually feel softer. Take the towel out, close the container and gently shake or stir to mix the moister tobacco with the drier bits underneath. If the bottom still feels crisp repeat the process with a freshly wrung towel for another twelve to twenty four hours.

Most RYO is back to workable in twenty four hours. Very dry blocks can take up to forty eight hours. The video example you shared took about fifty hours because it was left untouched. Checking and mixing speeds it up.

Do not soak the towel. Dripping water causes wet spots and mould. Do not let the towel touch the tobacco directly. The leaf will stick and you can get a papery taste. Do not microwave or use heat. It cooks the tobacco and ruins the flavour. Avoid using heavily chlorinated tap water in hard water areas as it can leave a slight note. Filtered is better. And do not over humidify. If the tobacco balls up and will not break apart leave the lid off for thirty to sixty minutes to let it breathe.

Once it is back to the right feel keep it stable. Store it in an airtight pouch or tin in a cool dark cupboard, not the fridge. Only open what you need for the day and keep the bulk sealed. If you buy by the carton keep unopened pouches vacuum sealed until you need them. Avoid re compressing it brick tight. A light press is enough to keep air out.

Rehydration will not save tobacco that has gone off. Bin it if you see white or green fuzz, smell a musty or sour note, or it has been wet for days. It is not worth the risk.
